This summer, I'll be spending two months in Dunkirk, a small French city in the north. While there, I'll be working for an organization called "les Petits Frères des Pauvres"( the little brothers of the poor). From what I understand, I'll be making house visits to elderly folks in order to lift their spirits and help with menial household needs--basically, I'll be interning as a American granddaughter to elderly French people. For my efforts, I will be getting 6 academic credits, a mostly paid stay (some meals and travel excluded), as well as the opportunity to meet a lot of amazing people. Despite my apprehensions about French "snootyness," I've been told that the Dunkirkers are a most genial country lot---which naturally comforts me. I've also heard that they have a very "special" accent, borderline hickish…great. Hopefully that won't be one of the souvenirs that I pick up on my trip.
Dunkirk is located 6 miles south of the Belgian border, 2 hours by train from Paris, and a boat ride away from England. So, I'll be taking advantage of some weekends to travel around. Lauren, my BYU teammate for the trip, and I are wanting to visit Ireland. Also, I'm hoping to escape for a Spanish getaway  to visit my Aunt's family in Pamplona. And since it's a perfect distance away, by the end of August I hope to be able to run into Belgium and back to complete my 2nd half-marathon---the running should hopefully counterbalance all the chocolates and Belgian waffles I'll be consuming….but we'll see. Frenchies have no qualms about talking about weight; so, if it doesn't, I'm sure to hear about it.

Despite its smallness, Dunkirk has been the home of some interesting historical events. In fact, what took place here during WWII has been called one of the miracles that saved the war. In 1940, the Germans were driving the British and French soldiers at lightning speeds. They eventually ended up trapped on the beach of Dunkirk. For unknown reasons, Hitler and his generals decided to take some time to regroup instead of eliminating their enemies immediately. This slight pause allowed over 330,000 soldiers to escape which would be consequential to later war efforts. Because of the shallow shore, private and commercial boats were needed to haul the crammed soldiers from shore to larger boats. Thanks to the concerted efforts, they were saved from certain death!

According to war experts, the evacuation of Dunkirk is one of the fatal flaws that Hitler made. So, I will be walking in not only a  historical place, but for me a spiritual one as well. I fully believe that God oversaw and orchestrated the unlikely rescue of those soldiers for a future victory against Hitler on D-Day. At times, we question God's judgement; we wonder why He doesn't immediately end the horrors that war and daily greed so often engender. And yet, I know that He is quietly present in all of histories miracles, on both the national and the individual scale. He won't deny us our agency, but  "the tender mercies of the Lord are over all whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance" (1 Néphi 1:20). I know that God was watching over His children in Dunkirk 74 years ago, and I know that He'll be watching over me in my daily battles.
